artemis42: (Sombre Dawn)
Went down to Santa Barbara on Friday afternoon to visit Henri's brother Andre, which took about 6 hours. What Henri had mentioned as a potluck A was taking us to turned out to be a house party on a street adjoining the beach, where undergrads wander the night in search of beer and parties to crash. Definitely not our scene, but my dip was a huge hit and I got to hang out and knit while watching the newish Final Fantasy game and take a walk along the beach at night before heading back to A's apartment.
We watched a bit of the live Bill Hicks disc I'd brought and slept, then got up around noon and visited the reef touch tanks and walked over to the beachfront. The waves crashing into the shore were huge, and it was great to just stand and watch the sea for a while. Later that evening, after the most amazing nachos I have ever enjoyed, we went out to see Borat. While it was certainly funny as hell, I'm not sure that seeing the uncensored stupidity of US citizens improved my mood much. It was amusing hearing Andre imitating the voice off and on all weekend, though.

We stopped at Rideau Vineyards on the way home, at Henri's dad's recommendation, after enjoying a bowl of pea soup at Andersen's. Both stops were lovely, and we got a tasty Riesling at the vineyard and the recipe from Andersen's so I can make my own soup at home. Being brain dead by the time we got home, we chilled out on the couch to The Cure and fell asleep early. H wasn't feeling so hot upon waking, so I've been plying him with hot medicinal tea.

I got the spinning wheel coated with lemon oil a few days ago, and it looks remarkably different than when it first got here. The wood was really dry, and the oil's restored a lot of shine. I think I'll give it another light coat all over again in another week or so, then give it a coating of a protective wax, since the wood's unfinished and old. I gave the flyer and all the hooks a thorough cleaning as well, so the whole wheel seems happier, and is definitely working much more smoothly. I'm currently spinning the soy silk for the first time on the wheel, and so far, so good. It doesn't draft out as easily as other fibers, but it is lovely and soft.

I've sort of stalled out on the Nano novel, somewhere around 5500 words. I think from here on in, I'll just be trying to bang out the framework as Dex suggested, since if I try to catch up, I'll just end up hiding in bed.

Now to think up some dinner.

Later.
