Multitasking in my sleep.
Apr. 8th, 2005 12:23 pmWell, I seem to have gone and overloaded myself again. No big surprise, really.. I just need to get it all done. The last of the typing for the policy manual needs to get done by Monday, I need to file with our friends at the IRS on time, I have a rather large pile of items to post, now that I'm nearly done scanning all of them in.. just a few pictures to take, and then I write out descriptions and create an html page for each auction. Once I get all the pages generated, I can post all of them on Monday.
Then hopefully something sells so I'll get paid.
I think I'll list some of my Star Wars stuff again along with the ephemera, that way I know something will move. *sigh*
Grading comics again has been really nice.. I've been wanting to sit and go through my own collections again recently.. should probably bag and board them all, but I've never wanted to bother.. the stuff I have gets read, which is what it was meant for.. and most of the really old books I have are reader copies. Great to have, and read and enjoy without worrying about the value of the book. There are plenty of weirdos out there who have the time and money to buy books off the shelf and seal them away in the vain hope that they'll be valuable. I'm not going to waste my time and relinquish the enjoyment of actually reading the comic. Honestly, unless your book was published before 1979 and is in near-mint condition... it's probably not even worth cover price.
There are millions of copies of most mainstream comics out there, and books from the 80s and 90s in good shape are plentiful.
Don't get me wrong.. there's something exciting about getting to examine older books in great shape. Like a forgotten gem, a book from the 50s - 60s with great color, a nicely reflective cover, sharp corners and little wear from handling is rare. It is precisely the rarity of finding a book in that condition that makes it valuable. These books were intended to be rolled up in a child's back pocket, read and reread, then discarded. Printed on cheap newsprint with inks that don't last, by a printing process that was cheap, fast, and sometimes damaged the book in the process.
On that note, I'm going to read some EC comics while I enjoy my breakfast and wait to hear the phone ring and find if I'm grading more this afternoon or just going to work at the co-op.
Of course, thinking about EC reminds me to try and contact my Australian Prince, since we still have to finalise whether or not I'm actually coming out there in June rather soon, so I can plan and get the request in for the time off work.
We shall see....
Later.
